Prediabetes is not Pre-anything

Prediabetes is not pre anything!   It is a deadly disease driving our biggest killers:  heart attacks, strokes, dementia, and cancer.   2/3 of all patients admitted to ER with heart attacks had prediabetes or undiagnosed diabetes (Jessani, Int. J. Clin Practice 2007).    People feel “relieved” when they are diagnosed with prediabetes, but shouldn’t be!  Did you know that prediabetes can cause pre-dementia or mild cognitive impairment.  Think of it as early Alzeimers!

“Few people know they have prediabetes and yet they could prevent or postpone diabetes by making some basic lifestyle changes.”  says Ann Albright, director of CDC’s diabetes division.   “This should be shouted from the rooftop.”

Over 84 million people older than 20 years of age, have prediabetes mellitus.   93% of people with prediabetes are undiagnosed.   Blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but do not meet the classification for diabetes.

A1C = 5.7% to 6.4%.

Fasting blood sugar of 100-125 mg/dL

2 hour glucose tolerance of 150-199mg/DL.
